Christmas Markets in Vienna

Mulled wine in hand, snow falling softly, and the most magical twinkling lights you've ever seen.

The Route

the journey, step by step

We arrived in Vienna on a crisp December afternoon. The city was already dressed for Christmas — lights strung across every street, the smell of roasted chestnuts drifting through the air, and that particular winter magic that only European cities seem to pull off.

The first evening we went straight to the Rathausplatz market. Hundreds of wooden stalls, handcrafted ornaments, the best Glühwein I've had in my life. The Vienna City Hall behind it was lit up like a fairy tale. We stayed until our fingers were numb.

Over the next three days we worked our way through every market we could find. Spittelberg, tucked into narrow cobblestone streets. Am Hof, elegant and less crowded. The one at Schönbrunn Palace — hot chocolate with a baroque palace glowing behind you.

The snow started falling on our third evening. Light, gentle, perfect. I stood in Stephansplatz with my Punschkrapferl and thought: this is what joy feels like.
