The Route

the journey, step by step

We picked up the rental car in Edinburgh and drove north. Within an hour the landscape had completely transformed — rolling green hills gave way to rugged mountains, and the sky kept shifting between dramatic clouds and sudden bursts of sunlight.

The drive to Glencoe was the most dramatic of my life. Steep valley walls rising on both sides, waterfalls appearing out of nowhere, and that feeling of being tiny in the best possible way. We pulled over approximately every five minutes.

From Glencoe we drove to Fort William and then across to the Isle of Skye. Three days on Skye wasn't enough — the Fairy Pools alone deserve a full day. The Old Man of Storr hike in morning mist was otherworldly. We came back via Loch Ness, but Nessie remained elusive.
